Squid the Whale

This past Sunday I had the opportunity to see a great show in Cleveland, OH at “Now That’s Class”. The headlining band was an extremely talented group of guys from Michigan. Their name was Squid the Whale. The band made their presence known the second they stepped on the stage, which was a refreshing change from the previous acts because they all seemed to blur together for me. Despite the size of the stage, Squid the Whale had no trouble moving around like a bunch of guys that were having a blast. That passion and excitement was then  emulated by the audience.

Unlike most shows, Squid the Whale’s sound was amazingly clear and could easily be understood and enjoyed. Frontman, Brad Walden’s voice sounded incredible. Bassist, Dan Mataczynski had as much energy as a hardcore punk rocker, which is a terrible comparison… oh well. Guitarist, Brandon Kubiac was an artist, concentrating on hitting all of the right notes (he nailed every single one, by the way). Drummer, Jonathan Wagoner shot out incredible beats throughout the show and flaunted bloody hands to show how hard he worked.

After the show, my friends and I got to hangout with the guys. They’re very fun people to be with and if you ever have the chance, I’d strongly recommend striking up a conversation with them!

Squid the Whale’s new EP, “New War.” is out now. Go listen to it on Spotify and buy it! Below are some links to help you better understand and help out Squid the Whale.

Mayday Parade single

Mayday Parade announced that they will be releasing a brand new single tomorrow morning (Wednesday, July 27) exclusively at Alternative Press. I’m under the assumption that the song has “Oh Well” in the title. The band has asked fans to spread the love all over Twitter by getting their new song trending. #Ohwellohwell.

Cartel releases single

Georgia-based pop-rock band, Cartel, just released a single last night on iTunes. The track is titled “Lessons in Love”. I can honestly say that this new song is typical Cartel, however, with that said, I can also say that their talent is not retrograding. This band is still one of the best in the scene, and it looks like they plan on staying that way for quite some time. In unrelated news, their bassist, Jeff Lett, has indeed left the band. There were no hard feelings with his departure since he left to finish off school.

That’s Outrageous!: “Teenage Scream” tracklisting and review

Hate your ex-girlfriend? Like hardcore music? Then Teenage Scream is for you!

That’s Outrageous! is one of Rise Records’ newest additions to the family. Their debut album, “Teenage Scream”, could easily be described as ‘electronicore’. For fans of the genre, Teenage Scream is a must have for your music library. Even those that aren’t fans of the genre could find something in the album that they find interesting. With angelic singing infused with goosebump-inducing screams and breakdowns, That’s Outrageous! could easily make their way to the top of the music scene very quickly.

CurbsideAudio Presents: Shut Up and Deal

Hey all! It’s been a while since I’ve posted anything… actually, it’s been a while since ANYONE has posted anything. With Jake and Kriston gone that leaves pretty much just myself and Brandon to keep up the blog. Yes, the posting has been slow, but we always have it in the back of our minds.

After visiting the 2011 Vans Warped Tour yesterday in Cleveland, and sitting in on an EIY (Earn It Yourself) meeting with tour owner/founder Kevin Lyman, my eyes were opened. From hearing various speeches by Kevin, Shut Up and Deal’s lead vocalist, Joe Heafy, and many other “behind-the-scenes” people of Warped, I discovered that being in the music business isn’t the easiest thing. You can’t just say that you love music; you can’t just say that you want to go somewhere in the music industry; you can’t just say that you want to do something musical. You actually have to go out and do those things. And this is me going out and doing what needs to be done.

After hearing Joe talk, I thought it would be a great idea to go see his band, who was playing at the Kia Kevin Says Stage later that day. I honestly couldn’t believe how great they were! A completely independent band that sounded incredible and had great stage presence and a charismatic personality to match. They really are worth the time to take a listen to a song or two. If you like pop-punk, or, in my case, like pop-punk bands, then Shut Up and Deal is just for you! They recently released an album entitled “This One’s For Me”.
